The Royal Southampton Yacht Club's Round The Island double handed race, sponsored by McGuigan Wines, took place on Saturday 12 July. A force 4/5 north westerly that backed to the west over the day gave ideal conditions and a great time was had by all, I think. Flawless J had a great result coming third in IRC1, just pipping Voador and Jelly Baby to the line, all incredibly close. From the results it looks like Juneau were first over the line but retired after racing having infringed the racing instructions. Frustrating or what! |

Congratulations to Marc Noel and Moontiger (over from France for the day) who were the first J105 Round the Island and third overall in IRC Class 2B. It was without question the most enjoyable Round the Island Race that I have done, what a blast, perfect J105 conditions. On Fay-J we had the normal Round the Island problems of finding and trying to keep clear air while avoiding kamikazi Sunsail boats. The first task was easier than the second! Our next issue was the decision to drop our lightweight masthead kite when we were seeing 30 knots too regularly for comfort (and the bank balance) just past St Cats. The delay while we faffed around hoisting the fractional only to see the wind drop quickly back within the masthead range in hindsight looks like it may have cost us the race, given that there was only 7 minutes between us and Moontiger at the finish with a whole gaggle of J105's finishing within minutes of each othe. Fantastic, close J105 racing - why would anybody want another boat! Results: elapsed time (no rating adjustment) Moontiger - 6.53.57 Jelly Baby - 6.56.53 Jolene - 6.57.23 Jeopardy - 7.00.29 Fay-J - 7.01.02 Flawless - 7.03.37 (double handed - great sailing guys) Bojangles and Just Acquaholix were about an hour further back (what happened?) with J-Spot another hour behind them. Have I missed anybody? Paul Griffiths |

Last Saturday 7th June saw the second year for the Saltash Sailing Club run PIPs and COGS Race from Plymouth to Fowey. Some of the best sailing conditions were seen so far this year with blue skies and a consistent wind speed of between 12 and 16 knots from the South West. Twenty five yachts took part of which there were nine in the COGS fleet including 2 J/105's - Orijin (ex Repete, (Andy Dennis) and Jester (Chris Ogg), a significant increase from last year. The start from Mount Batten Break Water began the tricky exit from Plymouth Sound with competitors negotiating their way through wind shifts and tide, a usual for the geography of this area, local boats fairing better than most. The race across Whitesand Bay was completed with a sudden wind shift to the North West with some competitors fairing better than others, depending on the ground they had made across the choppy seas. The final leg up through Fowey harbour was it's usual challenge with the wind coming from the North West. The prize giving this year was hosted by the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club, a first for COGS and we look forward to returning after the Eddystone Race organised by St Mawes Sailing Club. This is the next race in the COGS series, scheduled to run on Saturday 28th June. Details on the COGS website at http://www.cogsracing.org.uk. Results as follows IRC 1st Orijin (Andy Dennis) 2nd Elusive (Neil Trathen) 3rd Sky (Richard Kirkham) 4th Jester (Chris Ogg) PY 1st Amante (Roy Bennett) 2nd Elleannor (Clive Norris) 3rd Noon Hi (Jack Penty) Two Handed 1st Origin (Andy Dennis) 2nd Noon Hi (Jack Penty) 3rd Livewire (Stuart Dodd) Team results: Currently RFYC lead with the fewest accumulated points. RCYC and HRSC are close behind in second and third places respectively. With 3 further races in the series to be completed, the top spot is still up for grabs, but clubs must ensure they have a team of three entered to remain competetive. Andy Dennis |

Whilst much of the country struggled for breeze, the J/105s enjoyed three days of superb racing for their 2008 UK National Championship at Hayling Island Sailing Club on 30th May to 1st June. The event was sponsored by the wireless electronics specialists Tacktick.
David and Kirsty Apthorp, reigning class champions with an extensive silver collection from 2007, moved on to the J/109 fleet this season leaving the competition open to established sailors and several newcomers. Raymarine Warsash Spring Series winners & potential favourites Fay-J suffered a disappointing start, with owner Paul Griffiths slipping a disk before the first day’s racing and forced to hand the wheel to son Mark. Spring Series second and third placed boats Voador and Java were also on the entry list and hoping for results. New to the class this year were Geoff Payne and his East-Coast based crew aboard Jolene, Vernon Bradley’s ex-dinghy sailing crew on Jackpot and Laurence Mead (of Etchells class) with family team on Juneau. All to play for then…
A late Thursday / early Friday morning arrival for most meant clear heads for the first race, which got off in a light but building breeze in Hayling Bay. James Heald’s 2-handed entry Flawless J showed sparkling form in the light air and challenged for wins, but ultimately settled for three thirds and a second place overnight to Rob Dornton-Duff’s Java.
Saturday started with another unpromisingly light forecast, and slightly less clear heads, but a whisper of a sea breeze building to five to six knots was enough to start racing and it held and built to ten knots over the programmed four races. Having missed Day One, Juneau joined the fleet and claimed a first and two seconds under confident helmsmanship from the youngest driver in the class, Laurence Mead. Remaining wins were shared by Fay-J, Java and Juneau, with the shortish windward/leeward courses and oscillating wind giving plenty of opportunity for thrills and spills throughout the fleet. Java held the lead at the end of the second day followed by Fay-J and Voador. Saturday night saw most crews gathered at HISC to enjoy the championship dinner and some questionable dancing skills in the best traditions of the class…
Sunday dawned overcast and windless, but the PRO headed out undeterred and true to form conjured a glimmer of sunshine and enough of a sea breeze to get the J/105s moving for the final two races. After some of the closest racing of the regatta Rob Dornton-Duff’s Java took their fifth win and an overall points victory, with Fay-J second and Simon Curwen’s Voador third.
Overall the weekend provided fine one-design conditions with steady breeze and tide and great hospitality. Prizes were generously awarded by Hayling Island Sailing Club and National Championship sponsors Tacktick, with big thanks going to former Class Captain Kirsty Apthorp for organising the regatta.
